2 Sam 11:1-27
1 It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings
go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him,
and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged
Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
2 Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and
walked on the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw
a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.
3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said,
"Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah
the Hittite?"
4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him,
and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and
she returned to her house.
5 And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said,
"I am with child."
6 Then David sent to Joab, saying, "Send me Uriah the Hittite."
And Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 When Uriah had come to him, David asked how Joab was doing, and
how the people were doing, and how the war prospered.
8 And David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash your
feet." So Uriah departed from the king's house, and a gift of food
from the king followed him.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants
of his lord, and did not go down to his house.
10 So when they told David, saying, "Uriah did not go down to his
house," David said to Uriah, "Did you not come from a journey? Why
did you not go down to your house?"
11 And Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling
in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped
in the open fields. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink,
and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I
will not do this thing."
12 Then David said to Uriah, "Wait here today also, and tomorrow
I will let you depart." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day
and the next.
13 Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him; and he
made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with
the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.
14 In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab
and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, "Set Uriah in the forefront
of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck
down and die."
16 So it was, while Joab besieged the city, that he assigned Uriah
to a place where he knew there were valiant men.
17 Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab. And some
of the people of the servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite
died also.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war,
19 and charged the messenger, saying, "When you have finished telling
the matters of the war to the king,
20 if it happens that the king's wrath rises, and he says to you:
'Why did you approach so near to the city when you fought? Did you
not know that they would shoot from the wall?
21 'Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman
who cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall, so that he
died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall?'-- then you shall
say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.'"
22 So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab
had sent by him.
23 And the messenger said to David, "Surely the men prevailed against
us and came out to us in the field; then we drove them back as far
as the entrance of the gate.
24 "The archers shot from the wall at your servants; and some of
the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite
is dead also."
25 Then David said to the messenger, "Thus you shall say to Joab:
'Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one
as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city, and
overthrow it.' So encourage him."
26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead,
she mourned for her husband.
27 And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to
his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing
that David had done displeased the LORD.
2 Sam 12:1-24
1 Then the LORD sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and
said to him: "There were two men in one city, one rich and the
other poor.
2 "The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds.
3 "But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which
he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him
and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his
own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him.
4 "And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from
his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring
man who had come to him; but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared
it for the man who had come to him."
5 So David's anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he
said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who has done this
shall surely die!
6 "And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did
this thing and because he had no pity."
7 Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the LORD
God of Israel: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered
you from the hand of Saul.
8 'I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into
your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And
if that had been too little, I also would have given you much
more!
9 'Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil
in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword;
you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with
the sword of the people of Ammon.
10 'Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house,
because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah
the Hittite to be your wife.'
11 "Thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will raise up adversity against
you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your
eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your
wives in the sight of this sun.
12 'For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all
Israel, before the sun.'"
13 So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD."
And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin;
you shall not die.
14 "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion
to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is
born to you shall surely die."
15 Then Nathan departed to his house. And the LORD struck the
child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it became ill.
16 David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted
and went in and lay all night on the ground.
17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise
him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food
with them.
18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died.
And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child
was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while the child was alive, we
spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell
him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!"
19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived
that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants,
"Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead."
20 So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself,
and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD
and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested,
they set food before him, and he ate.
21 Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have
done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but
when the child died, you arose and ate food."
22 And he said, "While the child was alive, I fasted and wept;
for I said, 'Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to
me, that the child may live?'
23 "But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back
again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."
24 Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her
and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon.
Now the LORD loved him,
Ps 40:4
4 Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust, and does not
respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Ps 90:7-12
7 For we have been consumed by Your anger, and by Your wrath we
are terrified.
8 You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the
light of Your countenance.
9 For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; we finish our
years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of
strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor
and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You,
so is Your wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of
wisdom.
Prov 23:27-28
27 ...a harlot is a deep pit, and a seductress is a narrow well.
28 She also lies in wait as for a victim, and increases the unfaithful
among men.
Jer 5:1-10
1 "Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem; see now and
know; and seek in her open places if you can find a man, if there
is anyone who executes judgment, who seeks the truth, and I will
pardon her.
2 Though they say, 'As the LORD lives,' surely they swear falsely."
3 O LORD, are not Your eyes on the truth? You have stricken them,
but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have
refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder
than rock; they have refused to return.
4 Therefore I said, "Surely these are poor. They are foolish;
for they do not know the way of the LORD, the judgment of their
God.
5 I will go to the great men and speak to them, for they have
known the way of the LORD, the judgment of their God." But these
have altogether broken the yoke and burst the bonds.
6 ...their transgressions are many; their backslidings have increased.
7 "How shall I pardon you for this? Your children have forsaken
Me and sworn by those that are not gods. When I had fed them to
the full, then they committed adultery and assembled themselves
by troops in the harlots' houses.
8 They were like well-fed lusty stallions; every one neighed after
his neighbor's wife.
9 Shall I not punish them for these things?" says the LORD. "And
shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?
10 "Go up on her walls and destroy, but do not make a complete
end. Take away her branches, for they are not the LORD'S.
Matt 26:31-35,46-75
31 Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble
because of Me this night, for it is written: 'I will strike the
Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
32 "But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee."
33 Peter answered and said to Him, "Even if all are made to stumble
because of You, I will never be made to stumble."
34 Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you that this night,
before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."
35 Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will
not deny You!" And so said all the disciples.
46 "Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand."
47 And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the
twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from
the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I
kiss, He is the One; seize Him."
49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!"
and kissed Him.
50 But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they
came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
51 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out
his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest,
and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all
who take the sword will perish by the sword.
53 "Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He
will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
54 "How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen
thus?"
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out,
as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily
with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me.
56 "But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets
might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
57 And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas
the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
58 But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard.
And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.
59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought
false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,
60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward,
they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward
61 and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple
of God and to build it in three days.'"
62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing?
What is it these men testify against You?"
63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said
to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You
are the Christ, the Son of God!"
64 Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say
to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right
hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken
blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now
you have heard His blasphemy!
66 "What do you think?" They answered and said, "He is deserving
of death."
67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck
Him with the palms of their hands,
68 saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck
You?"
69 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl
came to him, saying, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee."
70 But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what
you are saying."
71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him
and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus
of Nazareth."
72 But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!"
73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter,
"Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you."
74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the
Man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.
75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him,
"Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." So he
went out and wept bitterly.
James 3:8-13
8 ...no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of
deadly poison.
9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men,
who have been made in the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren,
these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same
opening?
12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear
figs? Thus no spring can yield both salt water and fresh.
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good
conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.
Rom 3:3-4
3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the
faithfulness of God without effect?
4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar...
2 Pet 2:20-21
20 ... if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world
through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they
are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse
for them than the beginning.
21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the
way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy
commandment delivered to them.
John 14:23-24
23 Jesus... said ..., "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word;
and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make
Our home with him.
24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word
which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.
2 Tim 1:12-14
12 I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and
am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to
Him until that Day.
13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from
me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus who dwells in
us.
14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy
Spirit who dwells in us.
1 Cor 8:2-6
2 ...if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing
yet as he ought to know.
3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.
4 ... we know that ... there is no other God but one.
5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on
earth (as there are many gods and many lords),
6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things,
and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all
things, and through whom we live.
1 Tim 4:7-16
7 ...reject profane and old wives' fables, and exercise yourself
toward godliness.
8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable
for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of
that which is to come.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.
10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because
we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially
of those who believe.
11 These things command and teach.
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers
in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to
doctrine.
14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to
you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that
your progress may be evident to all.
16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them,
for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear
you.
Hebrews 6:4-6
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and
have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the
Holy Spirit,
5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age
to come,
6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since
they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him
to an open shame.
May God bless
the reading of His Word.
Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than
any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and
spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts
and intents of the heart.
