Exod 19:1-6, 9, 16-19
1 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out
of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness
of Sinai.
2 ...Israel camped there before the mountain.
3 And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the
mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and
tell the children of Israel:
4 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you
on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself.
5 'Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My
covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all
people; for all the earth is Mine.
6 'And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'
These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."
9 And the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you in the thick
cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe
you forever." So Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.
16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that
there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the
mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that
all the people who were in the camp trembled.
17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God,
and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
18 Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended
upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace,
and the whole mountain quaked greatly.
19 And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder
and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice.
Exod 20:2-17
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness
of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath,
or that is in the water under the earth;
5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD
your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers
on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who
hate Me,
6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep
My commandments.
7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for
the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In
it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter,
nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle,
nor your stranger who is within your gates.
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the
sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore
the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long
upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
13 "You shall not murder.
14 "You shall not commit adultery.
15 "You shall not steal.
16 "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet
your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant,
nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
Ps 37:30-31
30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks
of justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall
slide.
Ps 119:54-74, 92-94, 100-106
54 Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
55 I remember Your name in the night, O LORD, and I keep Your
law.
56 This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts.
57 You are my portion, O LORD; I have said that I would keep Your
words.
58 I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; be merciful to
me according to Your word.
59 I thought about my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.
61 The cords of the wicked have bound me, but I have not forgotten
Your law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, because of Your
righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all who fear You, and of those who keep
Your precepts.
64 The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; teach me Your statutes.
65 You have dealt well with Your servant, O LORD, according to
Your word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe Your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.
68 You are good, and do good; teach me Your statutes.
69 The proud have forged a lie against me, but I will keep Your
precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as fat as grease, but I delight in Your law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn
Your statutes.
72 The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins
of gold and silver.
73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding,
that I may learn Your commandments.
74 Those who fear You will be glad when they see me, because I
have hoped in Your word.
92 Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished
in my affliction.
93 I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given
me life.
94 I am Yours, save me; for I have sought Your precepts.
100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may
keep Your word.
102 I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself
have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to
my mouth!
104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate
every false way.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your righteous
judgments.
Matt 5:17-48
17 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18 "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away,
one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till
all is fulfilled.
19 "Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments,
and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven;
but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in
the kingdom of heaven.
20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means
enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall
not murder,' and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.
22 "But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without
a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to
his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever
says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 "Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember
that your brother has something against you,
24 "leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First
be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 "Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way
with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge
hand you over to the officer, and you are thrown into prison.
26 "Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there
till you have paid the last penny.
27 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall
not commit adultery.'
28 "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for
her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast
it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your
members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
30 "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast
it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your
members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
31 "Furthermore it has been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife,
let him give her a certificate of divorce.'
32 "But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason
except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever
marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
33 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You
shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'
34 "But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven,
for it is God's throne;
35 "nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem,
for it is the city of the great King.
36 "Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make
one hair white or black.
37 "But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever
is more than these is from the evil one.
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a
tooth for a tooth.'
39 "But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps
you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40 "If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him
have your cloak also.
41 "And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
42 "Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow
from you do not turn away.
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor
and hate your enemy.'
44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse
you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully
use you and persecute you,
45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes
His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the
just and on the unjust.
46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you?
Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 "And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than
others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
48 "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven
is perfect.
John 14:15
15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments.
Matt 15:1-2, 7-9, 17-20
1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came
to Jesus, saying,
2 "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?
For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."
7 "Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
8 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me
with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments
of men.' "
17 "Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes
into the stomach and is eliminated?
18 "But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from
the heart, and they defile a man.
19 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.
20 "These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed
hands does not defile a man."
Mark 12:14-17
14 When they had come, they said to Him, "Teacher, we know that
You are true, and care about no one; for You do not regard the
person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful
to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
15 "Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?" But He, knowing their
hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius
that I may see it."
16 So they brought it. And He said to them, "Whose image and inscription
is this?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."
17 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Render to Caesar the
things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
And they marveled at Him.
Mark 12:28-34
28 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning
together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him,
"Which is the first commandment of all?"
29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is:
'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
30 'And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'
This is the first commandment.
31 "And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor
as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
32 So the scribe said to Him, "Well said, Teacher. You have spoken
the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.
33 "And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding,
with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's
neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings
and sacrifices."
34 Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him,
"You are not far from the kingdom of God."...
Luke 16:16-17
16 "The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time
the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing
into it.
17 "And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for
one tittle of the law to fail.
John 1:17
17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ.
Acts 13:38-39
38 "... let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man
is preached to you the forgiveness of sins;
39 "and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things
from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Rom 7:4-25
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law
through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--
to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit
to God.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were
aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to
death.
6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to
what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of
the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the
contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For
I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You
shall not covet."
8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in
me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.
9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came,
sin revived and I died.
10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring
death.
11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and
by it killed me.
12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just
and good.
13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But
sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through
what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become
exceedingly sinful.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold
under sin.
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to
do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law
that it is good.
17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in
me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells;
for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good
I do not find.
19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I
will not to do, that I practice.
20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do
it, but sin that dwells in me.
21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who
wills to do good.
22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law
of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which
is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body
of death?
25 I thank God-- through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with
the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the
law of sin.
Rom 13:1-10
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For
there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that
exist are appointed by God.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance
of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you
want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you
will have praise from the same.
4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil,
be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's
minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.
5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but
also for conscience' sake.
6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers
attending continually to this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due,
customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves
another has fulfilled the law.
9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You
shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear
false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other
commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall
love your neighbor as yourself."
10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment
of the law.
Gal 3:7, 11, 13-14
7 ... know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.
11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God
is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become
a curse for us...
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in
Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit
through faith.
Heb 10:16-22, 26
16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those
days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and
in their minds I will write them,"
17 then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember
no more."
18 Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an
offering for sin.
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by
the blood of Jesus,
20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through
the veil, that is, His flesh,
21 and having a High Priest over the house of God,
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith,
having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies
washed with pure water.
26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge
of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
1 Tim 1:8-15
8 ...we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,
9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person,
but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for
sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers
and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars,
for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary
to sound doctrine,
11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was
committed to my trust.
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because
He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,
13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an
insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly
in unbelief.
14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith
and love which are in Christ Jesus.
15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am
chief.
James 2:10-13
10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one
point, he is guilty of all.
11 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not
murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder,
you have become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of
liberty.
13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.
Mercy triumphs over judgment.
May God bless
the reading of His Word.
Heb 4:12 For the word
of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of
joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
of the heart.
