Genesis 2:18, 21-25
18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone;
I will make him a helper comparable to him."
21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he
slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in
its place.
22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made
into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my
flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of
Man."
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined
to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not
ashamed.
Prov 31:10-31
10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have
no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13 She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships, she brings her food from afar.
15 She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for
her household, and a portion for her maidservants.
16 She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants
a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does
not go out by night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds
the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her
hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household
is clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes tapestry for herself; her clothing is fine linen
and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders
of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies sashes
for the merchants.
25 Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time
to come.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law
of kindness.
27 She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat
the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also,
and he praises her:
29 "Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all."
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears
the LORD, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise
her in the gates.
Job 31:1-11
1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look
upon a young woman?
2 For what is the allotment of God from above, and the inheritance
of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is it not destruction for the wicked, and disaster for the workers
of iniquity?
4 Does He not see my ways, and count all my steps?
5 "If I have walked with falsehood, or if my foot has hastened
to deceit,
6 Let me be weighed on honest scales, that God may know my integrity.
7 If my step has turned from the way, or my heart walked after
my eyes, or if any spot adheres to my hands,
8 Then let me sow, and another eat; yes, let my harvest be rooted
out.
9 "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked
at my neighbor's door,
10 Then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down
over her.
11 For that would be wickedness; yes, it would be iniquity deserving
of judgment.
Mal 2:13-17
13 And this ...you do: you cover the altar of the LORD with tears,
with weeping and crying; so He does not regard the offering anymore,
nor receive it with goodwill from your hands.
14 Yet you say, "For what reason?" Because the LORD has been witness
between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt
treacherously; yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
15 But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit?
And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to
your spirit, and let none deal treacherously with the wife of
his youth.
16 "For the LORD God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for
it covers one's garment with violence," says the LORD of hosts.
"Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously."
17 You have wearied the LORD with your words; yet you say, "In
what way have we wearied Him?" In that you say, "Everyone who
does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delights in
them," or, "Where is the God of justice?"
1 Cor 6:15-20
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall
I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot?
Certainly not!
16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one
body with her? For "the two," He says, "shall become one flesh."
17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside
the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his
own body.
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy
Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not
your own?
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your
body and in your spirit, which are God's.
Song 8:6-7
6 Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for
love is as strong as death, jealousy as cruel as the grave; its
flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame.
7 Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it.
If a man would give for love all the wealth of his house, it would
be utterly despised...
Eccl 9:9
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your
vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days
of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor
which you perform under the sun.
Prov 12:4
4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes
shame is like rottenness in his bones.
Prov 25:24
24 It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a
house shared with a contentious woman.
Prov 21:19
19 Better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious
and angry woman.
Prov 27:4,5,8,15-16
4 Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent, but who is able to stand
before jealousy?
5 Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed.
8 Like a bird that wanders from its nest is a man who wanders
from his place.
15 A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious
woman are alike;
16 Whoever restrains her restrains the wind, and grasps oil with
his right hand.
Mark 10:2-12
2 The Pharisees came and asked ..., "Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his wife?"...
3 And He answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?"
4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of
divorce, and to dismiss her."
5 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Because of the hardness
of your heart he wrote you this precept.
6 "But from the beginning of the creation, God 'made them male
and female.'
7 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and
be joined to his wife,
8 'and the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer
two, but one flesh.
9 "Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."
10 In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same
matter.
11 So He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries
another commits adultery against her.
12 "And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she
commits adultery."
Mark 12:18-27
18 Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came
to Him; and they asked Him, saying:
19 "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies, and
leaves his wife behind, and leaves no children, his brother should
take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
20 "Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife; and
dying, he left no offspring.
21 "And the second took her, and he died; nor did he leave any
offspring. And the third likewise.
22 "So the seven had her and left no offspring. Last of all the
woman died also.
23 "Therefore, in the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife
will she be? For all seven had her as wife."
24 Jesus answered and said to them, "Are you not therefore mistaken,
because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?
25 "For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are
given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
26 "But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read
in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke
to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and
the God of Jacob'?
27 "He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living...
Eph 5:22-33
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head
of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let
the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church
and gave Himself for her,
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of
water by the word,
27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not
having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should
be holy and without blemish.
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies;
he who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes
it, just as the Lord does the church.
30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and
be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and
the church.
33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his
own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her
husband.
Prov 18:22
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from
the LORD.
Rom 7:1-3
1 ... do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know
the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?
2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband
as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released
from the law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man,
she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she
is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she
has married another man.
1 Cor 7:1-40
1 ...It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2 Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have
his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.
3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and
likewise also the wife to her husband.
4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the
husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority
over his own body, but the wife does.
5 Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that
you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together
again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of
self-control.
6 But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment.
7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one
has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that.
8 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for
them if they remain even as I am;
9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For
it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife
is not to depart from her husband.
11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be
reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his
wife.
12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a
wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him,
let him not divorce her.
13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is
willing to live with her, let her not divorce him.
14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and
the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your
children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or
a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called
us to peace.
16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband?
Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?
17 But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called
each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches.
18 Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised.
Was anyone called while uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised.
19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but
keeping the commandments of God is what matters.
20 Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called.
21 Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it;
but if you can be made free, rather use it.
22 For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord's
freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ's slave.
23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
24 Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which
he was called.
25 Now concerning virgins: I have no commandment from the Lord;
yet I give judgment as one whom the Lord in His mercy has made
trustworthy.
26 I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present
distress-- that it is good for a man to remain as he is:
27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you
loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife.
28 But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin
marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble
in the flesh, but I would spare you.
29 But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now
on even those who have wives should be as though they had none,
30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice
as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did
not possess,
31 and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form
of this world is passing away.
32 But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares
for the things of the Lord-- how he may please the Lord.
33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world--
how he may please his wife.
34 There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried
woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy
both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about
the things of the world-- how she may please her husband.
35 And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash
on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord
without distraction.
36 But if any man thinks he is behaving improperly toward his
virgin, if she is past the flower of youth, and thus it must be,
let him do what he wishes. He does not sin; let them marry.
37 Nevertheless he who stands steadfast in his heart, having no
necessity, but has power over his own will, and has so determined
in his heart that he will keep his virgin, does well.
38 So then he who gives her in marriage does well, but he who
does not give her in marriage does better.
39 A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if
her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she
wishes, only in the Lord.
40 But she is happier if she remains as she is, according to my
judgment-- and I think I also have the Spirit of God.
1 Cor 11:3,7-9,11-12
3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ,
the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
7 For a man ... is the image and glory of God; but woman is the
glory of man.
8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man.
9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.
11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman
independent of man, in the Lord.
12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through
woman; but all things are from God.
Col 3:18-19
18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.
2 Cor 6:14-17
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what
fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion
has light with darkness?
15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a
believer with an unbeliever?
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you
are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell
in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall
be My people."
17 Therefore "Come out from among them and be separate, says the
Lord...
Heb 13:4
4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but
fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
1 Pet 3:1-12
1 Wives..., be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some
do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the
conduct of their wives,
2 when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.
3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward-- arranging the
hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel--
4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible
beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in
the sight of God.
5 For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted
in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own
husbands,
6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you
are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.
7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving
honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs
together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one
another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;
9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on
the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that
you may inherit a blessing.
10 For "He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain
his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace
and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears
are open to their prayers...
May God bless
the reading of His Word.
Heb 4:12 For the word
of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of
joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
of the heart.
