GENESIS 3:1-7
1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field
which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God
indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"
2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of
the trees of the garden;
3 "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden,
God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest
you die.'"
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.
5 "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will
be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that
it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one
wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband
with her, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that
they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves
coverings.
DEUTERONOMY 8:11-19
11 "Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping
His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command
you today,
12 "lest-- when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful
houses and dwell in them;
13 "and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver
and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;
14 "when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your
God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage;
15 "who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in
which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where
there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty
rock;
16 "who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers
did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test
you, to do you good in the end--
17 "then you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my
hand have gained me this wealth.'
18 "And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who
gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant
which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
19 "Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your
God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I
testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.
DEUTERONOMY 13:1-4
1 "If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams,
and he gives you a sign or a wonder,
2 "and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke
to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods'-- which you have
not known--' and let us serve them,'
3 "you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer
of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether
you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your
soul.
4 "You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep
His commandments and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him and
hold fast to Him.
PSALM 66:10
10 ...You, O God, have tested us; you have refined us as silver
is refined.
PSALM 119:165
165 Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes
them to stumble.
PROVERBS 1:10-15
10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.
11 If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait to shed blood;
let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole, like those
who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, we shall fill
our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us, let us all have one purse"--
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them, keep your foot from
their path;
PROVERBS 2:10-22
10 When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to
your soul,
11 Discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you,
12 To deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks
perverse things,
13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the
ways of darkness;
14 Who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of
the wicked;
15 Whose ways are crooked, and who are devious in their paths;
16 To deliver you from the immoral woman, from the seductress
who flatters with her words,
17 Who forsakes the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant
of her God.
18 For her house leads down to death, and her paths to the dead;
19 None who go to her return, nor do they regain the paths of
life--
20 So you may walk in the way of goodness, and keep to the paths
of righteousness.
21 For the upright will dwell in the land, and the blameless will
remain in it;
22 But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, and the unfaithful
will be uprooted from it.
PROVERBS 4:14-27
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the
way of evil.
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they do not sleep unless they have done evil; and their
sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of
violence.
18 But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines
ever brighter unto the perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what
makes them stumble.
20 My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my
sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst
of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to all
their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the
issues of life.
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips
far from you.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right
before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from
evil.
PROVERBS 6:27-35
27 Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; whoever touches
her shall not be innocent.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself
when he is starving.
31 Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; he may have
to give up all the substance of his house.
32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding;
he who does so destroys his own soul.
33 Wounds and dishonor he will get, and his reproach will not
be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is a husband's fury; therefore he will not spare
in the day of vengeance.
35 He will accept no recompense, nor will he be appeased though
you give many gifts.
PROVERBS 9:13-18
13 A foolish woman is clamorous; she is simple, and knows nothing.
14 For she sits at the door of her house, on a seat by the highest
places of the city,
15 To call to those who pass by, who go straight on their way:
16 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here"; and as for him who
lacks understanding, she says to him,
17 "Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant."
18 But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests
are in the depths of hell.
ECCLESIASTES 7:25, 29
25 I applied my heart to know, to search and seek out wisdom and
the reason of things, to know the wickedness of folly, even of
foolishness and madness.
29 Truly, this only I have found: that God made man upright, but
they have sought out many schemes."
ISAIAH 33:15-16
15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, he who despises
the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing
bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts
his eyes from seeing evil:
16 He will dwell on high; his place of defense will be the fortress
of rocks; bread will be given him, his water will be sure.
JEREMIAH 2:21-25
21 ...I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality.
How then have you turned before Me into the degenerate plant of
an alien vine?
22 For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet
your iniquity is marked before Me," says the Lord GOD.
23 "How can you say, 'I am not polluted, I have not gone after
the Baals'? See your way in the valley; know what you have done:
you are a swift dromedary breaking loose in her ways,
24 A wild donkey used to the wilderness, that sniffs at the wind
in her desire; in her time of mating, who can turn her away? All
those who seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they
will find her.
25 Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from
thirst. But you said, 'There is no hope. No! For I have loved
aliens, and after them I will go.'
MATTHEW 18:7-8
7 "Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come,
but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!
8 "If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast
it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed,
rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the
everlasting fire.
LUKE 4:1-15
1 ...Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, ...was led by the
Spirit into the wilderness,
2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days
He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
3 And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command
this stone to become bread."
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'"
5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him
all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You,
and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give
it to whomever I wish.
7 "Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours."
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! For
it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only
you shall serve.'"
9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of
the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw
Yourself down from here.
10 "For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over You,
to keep You,'
11 "and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash
your foot against a stone.' "
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, "It has been said, 'You
shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed
from Him until an opportune time.
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee,
and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.
15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
MARK 14:32-38
32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He
said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to
be troubled and deeply distressed.
34 Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even
to death. Stay here and watch."
35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed
that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.
36 And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You.
Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but
what You will."
37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon,
are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?
38 "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit
truly is willing, but the flesh is weak."
LUKE 11:33-36
33 "No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place
or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in
may see the light.
34 "The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye
is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your
eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.
35 "Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not
darkness.
36 "If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark,
the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining
of a lamp gives you light."
1 CORINTHIANS 10:12-13
12 ...let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to
man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted
beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make
the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
GALATIANS 1:6-9
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called
you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,
7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and
want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel
to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches
any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be
accursed.
GALATIANS 6:1-3, 7-8
1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are
spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering
yourself lest you also be tempted.
2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing,
he deceives himself.
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows,
that he will also reap.
8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption,
but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting
life.
2 PETER 2:4-9
4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them
down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be
reserved for judgment;
5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of
eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood
on the world of the ungodly;
6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned
them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward
would live ungodly;
7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy
conduct of the wicked
8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his
righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless
deeds)--
9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations
and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,
1 CHRONICLES 29:17
17 "I know..., my God, that You test the heart and have pleasure
in uprightness...
JAMES 1:12-22
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has
been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord
has promised to those who love Him.
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for
God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires
and enticed.
15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and
sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes
down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation
or shadow of turning.
18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that
we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear,
slow to speak, slow to wrath;
20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of
God.
21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,
and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to
save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
2 THESSALONIANS 3:1-4
1 ...brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run
swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you,
2 and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men;
for not all have faith.
3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you
from the evil one.
4 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that
you do and will do the things we command you.
HEBREWS 2:18
18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able
to aid those who are tempted.
HEBREWS 4:13-16
13 ...there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things
are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed
through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our
confession.
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with
our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without
sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we
may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
JAMES 1:20-22
20 ...the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,
and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to
save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
1 JOHN 2:16-17
16 For all that is in the world-- the lust of the flesh, the lust
of the eyes, and the pride of life-- is not of the Father but
is of the world.
17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who
does the will of God abides forever.
1 JOHN 4:1, 4
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits,
whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone
out into the world.
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because
He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Revelation 3:10-12
10 "Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will
keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole
world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
11 "Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that
no one may take your crown.
12 "He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of
My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the
name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem,
which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on
him My new name.
